Nestled among the Little San Bernardino mountains, off Highway 62 in Morongo Valley, Big Morongo Canyon Preserve (www.bigmorongo.org) is one of the largest cottonwood and willow riparian habitats in California. Riparian refers to wetlands adjacent to a stream or river. Big Morongo Creek is formed by water draining from the surrounding mountains through the canyon created by the Morongo Fault. The upstream end of the canyon lies in the Mojave Desert and its downstream portion opens into the Colorado Desert. This year-round water source provides a much needed stopping point for migrating birds in spring and fall. More than 235 species have been observed in the preserve, many of them stay year-round. The water also attracts mule deer, desert big horn sheep, raccoons, bobcats, kangaroo rats and other rodents, and on rare occasions a black bear might be seen.
The preserve is comprised of more than 31,000 acres of wetland and desert, and includes some of the oldest exposed rock in California, dating back 2 billion years. Elevations in the preserve range from 600 feet on the canyon floor to more than 3000 feet at the ridge tops. There are numerous trails to walk and hike, including a wheelchair accessible boardwalk. All trails begin at the kiosk by the parking lot. You may chose from a number of trails ranging from 3/10s of a mile to an 11 mile round trip hike through Big Morongo Canyon. Trail maps, trail guides for self-guided walks, information brochures, picnic areas, and restrooms are available at the preserve.
Today this area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management with the assistance of the Friends of Big Morongo Canyon Preserve to protect rare and endangered wildlife, to promote the growth and restoration of a wide variety of plants, and to offer educational opportunities for students and nature lovers of all ages.
